The environment of the University of Benin was filled with Enthusiasm and happiness as graduating students finalized the 2023/2024 academic session with an optimistic “Sign Out” celebration. Nevertheless, the celebrating moment took a twist when four male students were involved in a car accident as a result of reckless and noncautious driving.

Witnesses disclosed that the students, filled with excitement, were driving at a very high speed along the route from the Engineering Faculty to the staff quarters. Unluckily for them, their vehicle went out of control and crashed against a building that was still undergoing construction, resulting in serious damage to both the car and a part of the building.

Security personnel swiftly arrived at the scene, and they were immediately contacted to come savage the situation and rescue the victims. All four students sustained serious injuries and bruises. An ambulance was also called to convey them to the university’s medical center for appropriate treatment. However, during the commotion of the whole situation, two of the victims quietly left the scene, refusing medical attention and care. One of the students voluntarily entered the ambulance just so he could be treated, while the last, suspected to be the driver, initially refused to leave the scene until he recovered his phone from the wrecked vehicle, claiming it contained very important credentials.

His words at this point were “Can I go back to get my phone? there are very important credentials in it.” Eyewitnesses and bystanders try to dissuade him from the thoughts of returning to his damaged vehicle, but rather, they persuade him to get himself into the ambulance just so he can be treated.

After much persuasion, he was eventually taken into the ambulance and transported to the medical center for proper medical care. Meanwhile, UNIBEN security agents have reported the incident to the appropriate university authorities for further investigation.

This tragic event serves as a notification of the need for caution in times and moods of celebration. Students are encouraged to prioritize safety and reckless behaviors that could result in dire consequences.
