On the 27th of January 2025, between 4:30 pm and 5:00 pm in Ekosodin, Benin City, a gas explosion was reported to have occurred in a student hostel on JB, Edo Street.
The incident was caused by a gas cylinder leak, which was unknown to the victims. The victims attempted to use the cylinder for cooking, and upon turning it on, it resulted in an explosion.
The residents of the community immediately came to their rescue, assisting the three victims in evacuating the premises.
The victims, comprising two boys and a girl, are students of the Department of Philosophy. The two boys were reported to have sustained severe injuries, while the girl suffered only minor injuries. Their residence was severely damaged by the explosion, leaving it in a terrible state.
The Student Union Government (SUG) was promptly contacted and arrived at the scene along with the Red Cross, who transported the victims to the health centre, where they received immediate medical attention. They were later transferred to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
At this moment, there is no feedback on any possible repairs being carried out in the affected area. We advise the general public and students to exercise caution, especially regarding the handling of gas. They should ensure their cylinders are thoroughly checked before use and avoid the use of mobile phones near gas cylinders.
