The Students’ Union Government, University of Benin has countered the press release from the National Association of Nigerian Students, South-South Zone B Coordinator, making clear their stance on the issue of the increments of the hostel maintenance charges.

ACJ UNIBEN reports that the NANS ZONE B Coordinator had earlier made a press release condemning the increments from the management, encouraging students to boycott the payments and also giving an ultimatum to the management to reverse the increments.

However, The SUG, in a memo released on February 5, 2025, stated they were not consulted or involved in the issuance of the press release from NANS. They made it clear that they had negotiations beforehand with the management of the university and ensured the final increment that was made was fair and reasonable.

“For several weeks, we collaborated with the Students’ Union Parliament and hostel executives to push for a reduction in the proposed charges, ensuring that the final amount remains within a reasonable and a fair range. Our efforts were directed at securing a balance between affordability for students and the necessity for improved hostel conditions.”

The SUG has established that the press release from NANS does not mirror the position of the union and UNIBEN students and it should be disregarded. They also reiterated that the SUG remain the primary voice of the students to the Management and any interference in the affairs of the students of the Universitiy of Benin would not be tolerated.
