The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, South-South Zone (NANS Zone B) has condemned the increments in the hostel maintenance charges for the 2024/2025 academic session in the University of Benin.
Contained in a press release signed by the NANS ZONE B Coordinator, Comrade Isaac Ogieva on February 5, 2025, the students’ body condemns the action taken by the management of the University of Benin. It was established that the increments were done without proper consultations with various stakeholders. It was also reiterated that the promises that were made the last time an increment was made were yet to be fulfilled.
“It is important to note that just 2 years ago, these hostel maintenance fees were increased with promises of renovation and better welfare packages for students, and till date, nothing has been done.”
The leadership of the students’ body has given the management of the University of Benin 96 hours to withdraw the increments on its website.
“To this end, NANS under my leadership is giving the school authority 96 hours to withdraw such outrageous increments from university’s website or NANS will have no choice but to relocate its secretariat to the University of Benin.”
Students are urged to boycott the payment of the increased fees until the management rescinds its decisions. They are also encouraged to keep calm as the body will ensure their rights are protected.
