The Supreme Parliament, 38th Assembly, has countered the claim of the Students’ Union Executive arm regarding the issue of the increment of hostel maintenance fees.

ACJ UNIBEN reported that the Students’ Union Executive, in a counter-memo against the NANS press release, stated that they had made efforts with the Parliament and hostel leaders to negotiate the increment with the management of the university.

However, the Supreme Parliament, in a memo released on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, has debunked their involvement in the final increments negotiations. They established that the meetings that were held for negotiations were done by the executives. Although they stated the Speaker and the Clerk coincidentally joined a meeting as regards the negotiation on January 26, 2025, the conclusion of the meeting was to reconvene and discuss which never happened.

“The series of meetings held in respect to this increment was done by the executives. The Speaker and the Clerk of the 38th Assembly coincidentally joined a meeting of negotiation for the increment of the hostel fees, which was held on the 26th of January, 2025. The conclusion of the said meeting was that we were to reconvene at a follow-up meeting with the management to further discuss on the Hostel Fees Increment in which no meeting of such was held that we were aware of.”

The Students’ Union Parliament also stated that although the increment came as a shock to them, they had since requested that the Student Union Executives update the students of the university, which they refused to oblige to.

“It came as a rude shock to us to see the increment take place and have since requested the President and the Students’ Union Executives to update the Students Community on the development which they have refused.”

The Parliament established that they would not be used as an “object of ridicule” by the Executive arm.

“Furthermore, it is quite sad that the Parliament is being used as an object of ridicule to divert attention from the failed administration of Comr. Agboola Israel Timilehin and this issue will not be taken lightly.”
