A dinner party organized by the English and Literature Students’ Association (ELSA) executives to mark the end of the 2023/2024 session has turned into a controversy with allegations of irregularities surrounding the award session.

The controversy sparked when an attendee and the winner of the Most Beautiful ELSAN category accused the executives of “sharing” her award with her opponent who lost, thereby awarding two persons for same category. The executives was also alleged to have created new categories that were not on the voting platform.

The complainants took to the general group chat of ELSA to lay their complaints where they got a “not-so-satisfactory” answer from the executives.

Nathaniel, one of the complainant, in an interview with our correspondence said:

“The reason for our outburst now, is because yesterday, we found out that the biggest spender in the whole voting process, from the “most beautiful ELSAN” category, was made to share the award with the opponent who got the lowest vote in that category. This is the main bone of contention. Because she spent over 150,000 Naira to bag that award. Imagine the slap on her face, finding out that it was all worthless. This, and a few more, are the reasons for our agitation.”

Best, the winner of the category based on the results from the voting platform, in an interview, complained bitterly about spending money and still sharing her award.

“…And I won just to find out two people were given the award. I spent over 150k to win and all I got was a wood”

The President and Secretary-General, as of the time of filing this report, are yet to respond to our messages as regards the allegations.

The complainants has requested for explanations and compensations for the alleged irregularities.

“Just like we’ve established, what we need first is answers/explanations. Then a way forward should be decided. But we need compensation, one way or the other. So it is left for them now, to decide how they want it to go.”
