In the early hours of Monday, 28th October 2024, Manchester United dismissed its manager, Erik Ten Hag, with immediate effect following a series of poor results. The decision came after United’s 2-1 loss away to West Ham on Sunday, 27th October.
The Dutchman has been under intense pressure since the start of the season to turn things around after the club’s abysmal start, which saw them achieve just 3 wins from 10 games, losing 4 and drawing 3. This poor form has also continued in European competitions, with United picking up only 3 points from 3 group games in the UEFA Europa League.
Fans and pundits have been calling for Ten Hag’s dismissal, believing he no longer has anything to offer the club following United’s recent shambolic performances. The 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Sunday was the final straw, leading to Ten Hag’s departure the following morning. Assistant Manager and club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy will take over as interim coach until the club appoints a new manager.
Ten Hag leaves United after leading the club to two trophies in two seasons: the Carabao Cup (2022/2023) and the FA Cup (2023/2024). Some United fans still consider Ten Hag one of the club’s best managers since José Mourinho due to the success he achieved, bringing United its first trophy in seven years.
