A six-week suspension has been imposed on thirteen students for alleged assault and bullying of a fellow student at Federal Government College in Enugu State.

The announcement of the suspension was addressed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, in a statement released on Wednesday through the Director of Press and Public Relations, Folashade Boriowo.

The incident was exposed through a viral video on social media showing the bullying, which took place at the college over the weekend.

The incident involved a gang assault on an SS1 student, reportedly a new enrollee, by a group of thirteen students on 7 November 2024.

The matter came to light following the circulation of the viral video on social media platforms. In response, a disciplinary committee was set up by the Federal Ministry of Education to investigate the issue.

The Minister of Education subsequently directed the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) to collaborate with security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation. He also added that immediate measures had been implemented to enhance security at the college.

Federal Unity Colleges, known for their rich history dating back to 1973, were created by the Nigerian government to foster unity among youths by bringing students from different regions together.

There are two Federal Unity Colleges in Enugu State: Federal Government College Enugu (FGCE), also known as FEDI, a co-educational institution with over 3,000 students, and Federal Government Girls’ College, Lejja (FGGCL).

The Minister of Education’s prompt response to the bullying incident demonstrates the government’s commitment to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment for students in all federal schools across the country. The government aims to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
