For the first time in decades, the University of Benin has achieved full accreditation for its degree programmes from the National Universities Commission (NUC).

In a statement issued on Saturday, 18 April 2026, and signed by the Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire, PhD, MNIPR, the University confirmed that the accreditation exercise was successfully conducted by the Commission between October and November 2025. The exercise covered faculties, schools, and academic centres across the institution.

The National Universities Commission formally released the results of the accreditation in a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Edoba Bright Omoregie, SAN, dated 7 April 2026.

Reacting to the outcome, the Vice-Chancellor expressed satisfaction with the results, attributing the University’s success to the hard work and commitment of its management and staff towards academic excellence, as well as the promotion of high educational standards and values.

Professor Omoregie further commended the University Senate, faculties, departments, and relevant committees for their exceptional efforts in ensuring due diligence and strict adherence to accreditation requirements.

The full accreditation status, which is valid for five years, reinforces the University’s commitment to strengthening both its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, in line with the objectives outlined in the Vice-Chancellor’s five-point agenda.
