The University of Benin community has witnessed the introduction of receptacles on campus for the collection of plastics, PET bottles, and possibly cans. These receptacles were part of The Green Campus Project Initiative launched at the University of Benin on February 3, 2024, during the JCIN CleanUp Exercise.
The Green Campus Project is an initiative powered by Sweep Foundation in collaboration with Natural Eco Capital, funded by the Coca-Cola Foundation, with the University of Benin being one of the 5 campuses where this project is being kick-started.
A representative of Natural Eco Capital, during the launch, said, “Recognising the problems of plastics, stakeholders came together and agreed to embark on the mission of recovering the plastics from the environment. That is how we came about this project, powered by Sweep Foundation.”
In a bid to create a clean and more eco-friendly learning environment, receptacles have been deployed in strategic positions that are hotspots for waste collection, to be used only for plastics, PET bottles, and can disposals. Students are implored not to dispose of any other forms of refuse in these receptacles.
A representative of Eco Waste Wells, a facility of Natural Eco Capital used for recycling, mentioned in an interview, “We are here to position the Green Campus Project recycling bins at every position and to make students understand they are meant for PET bottles alone and not other items like nylons, papers, or clothes. That is why we are creating awareness to make students understand what we are actually doing.”
Every student of the University of Benin should make efforts to keep the school environment clean and free of plastic waste and also make use of the receptacles that were made available.
