On Sunday, the 14th of January, an influx of students returned to campus after activities for the semester had started a week earlier on the 7th of January. Rather than boisterous greetings and pleasantries exchanged, the atmosphere seemed rather dull. Some bemoaned the reality of another short semester, emphasizing the strain on lecturers and students alike.
A 300-level student of AEB, whose name is withheld, had this to say when asked about her resumption: “For me, it’s total stress for all students because it’s not quite long since we finished the first semester.” She continued, “It’s not everybody whose parents are sponsoring them. In the aspect that some students work hard to sponsor themselves, but with this hasty situation that our professor, Lillian, is trying to make some students, two sets graduate this session, it’s not good for our health. At this rate, our mental health is really tortured because we’re not in our right frame of mind.”
Another student of Mechanical Engineering in her final year (who chose to have her name withheld) had this to say about her resumption: “It’s tiring. The whole…first of all, the first semester was crap, and then it’s like we’re being pushed into the second semester.” On steps the management could take, she said, “Well, first of all, they should review their curriculum. They should review, and if they know, ‘okay, this semester is not going to be able to handle it,’ they should try and extend it. I mean, although sha, I would not even blame them because it’s a federal school.”
The semester has seen students ask for the calendar to be reversed back to normal, as some feel they have tried regarding rushing their learning and compressing the time available.
