A Chinese news agency reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a ceasefire in Gaza on Wednesday during his visit to Brazil’s capital. The agency stated that President Xi urged an end to the conflict and suggested that the war should be brought to a swift conclusion after meeting his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
President Xi and other G20 leaders reached a decision during the summit held on Monday and Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro. They emphasised the need to halt the fighting in Gaza, where Israel is conducting operations against Hamas.
The summit’s agreement included encouragement for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, where Israel also plans to confront the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.
However, on Wednesday, the United States vetoed a vote held by the UN Security Council, which called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. Many believe this action reflects the United States’ unique ties with Israel.
