In a national broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed the nation’s pressing challenges, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to alleviating the hardships faced by Nigerians.

President Tinubu acknowledged the struggles of rising living costs and unemployment but urged citizens to remain patient, assuring them that the reforms underway are beginning to show positive results. He expressed optimism about the nation’s future, stating, “We are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel.”

Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since independence in 1960, Tinubu paid homage to the country’s founding fathers, who envisioned a great nation that would lead Africa out of poverty and underdevelopment. He praised the resilience of Nigerians, highlighting the nation’s achievements in arts, science, technology, and infrastructure.

While Tinubu acknowledged the mistakes of the past, he emphasised the importance of not letting them hinder future progress. He pointed to his administration’s reforms in key areas such as security, the economy, and governance, noting significant strides in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and violent extremism. He highlighted the elimination of over 300 Boko Haram and bandit commanders and the restoration of peace in many parts of the North, with hopes for improved food production as farmers return to their land.

On the economic front, the President noted that Nigeria had attracted over $30 billion in foreign direct investment over the past year. He stressed the need for continued reforms, including fiscal policy adjustments, local government financial autonomy, and support for mechanised farming to reduce food costs.

Tinubu also announced upcoming initiatives, including a National Youth Conference to engage young Nigerians in addressing issues such as education, employment, and innovation. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to creating 2.5 million jobs through the Renewed Hope Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme (LEEP).

The President concluded by urging Nigerians to remain resilient, united, and optimistic about the nation’s future. “Together, we will cultivate a Nigeria that reflects the aspirations of all its citizens,” he said.

The broadcast ended with Tinubu wishing the nation a happy Independence Anniversary, expressing hope for better days ahead.

Happy Independence, my fellow Nigerians.
