The Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 General Elections, Bishop Isaac Idahosa, has called for disciplinary measures against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other public officials responsible for electoral incompetence in Nigeria.
Idahosa expressed disapproval of how INEC handled the 2023 general elections while speaking on Channels Television in their Morning Brief Program. He stated that the absence of consequences for electoral delinquency continues to sabotage Nigeria’s democracy.
He stated that the absence of adequate checks and consequences for electoral delinquency has enabled the electoral commission to repeat such incompetence.
He also suggested an electoral reform, which is, holding all elections on the same day, to curb electoral malpractice and reduce cost.
Idahosa’s comments increased the flourishing criticism of INEC following the dispute over the 2023 presidential election, which was triumphed by Bola Ahmed Tinubu but was widely contested by politicians and commentators. It was supposed to be to an advantage for the election due to the technological advancements such as the INEC RESULT VIEWING PORTAL (IREV) and the BIMODAL VOTER REGISTRATION SYSTEM (BVAS), but lack of consistency and discipline resulted in allegations of electoral malpractice.
In reaction to the hypothesis about a quarrel within the NNPP, Idahosa reiterated his commitment and loyalty to the party’s National leader, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. He placed emphasis on their continued close relationship, dismissing hearsay.
“To begin with, I’m still very close to my principal. He was here last week, on February 8, when I celebrated my 60th birthday. So we are still very much in touch, and we remain close. There is no crisis in our party; he is still our national leader, His Excellency, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.”, he established.
