Governor Godwin Obaseki, the Executive Governor of Edo State, has announced a commitment to provide free WiFi access for the University of Benin community within the next 30 days. This announcement was made during an academic event graced by the presence of Governor Obaseki and his wife, Betsy Obaseki. The event, meticulously organised by the UNIBEN Student Union Government (SUG) President, took place on August 9, 2023 at the Akin Deko Auditorium, University of Benin.
The Governor received a warm welcome from the University of Benin’s Vice Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Ekehuan campus, UNIBEN, Prof B.A Ayinde. During his welcome address, Prof Ayinde acknowledged the substantial contributions that Governor Obaseki and his wife have made to the institution’s development.
Comr Israel Nmoye, the SUG President, eloquently outlined Governor Godwin Obaseki’s commendable achievements across education, economy, agriculture, and his noteworthy impact on the University of Benin. In recognition of his far-reaching reforms, the institution honoured the Governor with a prestigious award. The award presentation ceremony featured the Vice Chancellor, Dean of Students Prof Clement Ighodaro, and the SUG President.
Following the award presentation, Governor Obaseki took the stage to express his deep appreciation for the well-organised academic event. He reiterated his unwavering commitment to the event’s success and underlined his primary focus on nurturing the future leaders—the students. Highlighting the Edo State Government’s emphasis on foundational education, he emphasized the goal of ensuring every child in Edo State receives an education.
Governor Obaseki also encouraged students to actively engage in politics, both within their school and in society at large, as a means to instigate transformation and positive change. Expressing gratitude to the event organisers, he further advised the SUG to establish a trust fund aimed at sustaining this enriching academic initiative. To seed this trust, he pledged a substantial sum of ten million naira (N10,000). Moreover, he announced a compelling promise—a provision of free WiFi for the University of Benin within the next thirty days to ensure connectivity in the institution’s premises. This proclamation evoked a spirited eruption of applause from the attendees of the event.
As the Governor concluded his speech and took his leave, he received a resounding standing ovation from the audience.
