Former President Muhammadu Buhari passed away on Sunday, 13 July 2025, at the age of 82. He died in a hospital in London, where he had gone for a routine medical check-up.

Buhari first came to power as Nigeria’s military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985. He later served as the democratically elected President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 2015 to 2023.

The announcement of his death was made by his former spokesman, Garba Shehu. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Shehu, who also served as Special Adviser during Buhari’s administration, wrote:

“The family of the former President has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him into Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”

According to Shehu, the former President died at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.

In the wake of his passing, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the late President’s remains back to Nigeria.

President Tinubu has reportedly spoken with the bereaved widow, Mrs Aisha Buhari, and extended his heartfelt condolences to the family. He also ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast in honour of the late leader.

Tributes have continued to pour in from leaders across the country and beyond, reflecting on Buhari’s legacy and service to the nation. May his soul rest in peace.
