A mandatory one-year residency program before enrolling for NYSC—for all engineering graduates—has just been approved by the Federal Government. The initiative is being spearheaded by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) as part of broader efforts to improve professional competence in the engineering sector.

The move aims to equip young engineers with practical experience under supervised mentorship. According to COREN, the Engineering Residency Programme is designed to bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and field application, aligning Nigeria’s engineering training with international best practices.

Under the policy, graduates will spend 12 months working in approved technical environments related to their area of study. This training will serve as a prerequisite for both “NYSC participation” and “professional registration with COREN”. The council noted that the programme also supports Nigeria’s commitment to the “International Engineering Alliance”, ensuring graduates are globally competitive.

Also, a monthly stipend of ₦75,000 is as well being considered to support participants during the residency. This, though, is still being finalized in collaboration with government agencies and private partners.

Education and labour sector stakeholders have largely welcomed the policy, describing it as a step toward producing work-ready graduates. Authorities maintain that the residency will reduce graduate unemployment, improve technical competence, and restore confidence in the nation’s engineering education system.
