Usi Eghosa Gift, a 500-level student of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), has emerged as the best candidate nationwide in the Mandatory Professional Examination (MPE) conducted by the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT).
The 2-day exam, held on May 7th and 8th, 2024, saw hundreds of students from various schools in Nigeria sit for the exam. Gift achieved an impressive average score of 95.5 in both Papers I and II (PI and PII), making her the overall best candidate among all who sat for the exam.
“Usi Eghosa Gift came out as the best candidate for MPE exam nationwide. Big congratulations to her,” said Dr. Collins from the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, University of Benin.
In an interview with the Association of Campus Journalists, University of Benin, Gift expressed her disbelief and gratitude, saying, “I’m overwhelmed with joy and gratitude. It’s just God; I still keep asking myself, ‘What did I write?'”
When asked about her motivation for studying Science Laboratory Technology, Gift attributed her fate to her JAMB result, saying, “It was JAMB, initially, but then I began to love the course, and I found out I was actually good at it.”
Gift advised her peers to strive for excellence, saying, “Always thrive for the best. Put in your best and trust in God. Remember, success is not cheap; it has a price tag called discipline, dedication, and focus.”
The top four positions were closely contested, with three students – Peters Chibuike Peter from the University of Port Harcourt, Isah Muhammed Nazir from the University of Jos, and Absalom Faith Wunfe also from the University of Jos – tying for second place with an average score of 95. Adeniji Abiodun Abiola, an external candidate from the LAUTECH center, took the third position with a score of 93.
Gift’s outstanding performance has earned her recognition and accolades from the university and professional communities. Her achievement is seen as a testament to the quality of education at the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, University of Benin.
