On Tuesday, 5th November 2024, an unidentified driver was caught violating traffic rules and regulations in the Mile 2 area of Lagos State and is still on the run.
According to the LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, who confirmed the incident in a statement, “The vehicle was intercepted for violating traffic rules and regulations in the Cele inward Mile 2 area. During the arrest, the driver and his conductor erupted into a frenzy, resorting to pouring petrol on the LASTMA personnel and engaging in hostile confrontations and physical attacks against the officers present.”
He added that the LASTMA officer sustained severe injuries and burns. He also assured that the perpetrators of the assault would be caught and brought to justice.
The general manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, stated, “The Lagos State Management Authority, LASTMA, has been made aware of a distressing video showing the driver of a Volkswagen T4 commercial bus, licence plate LSD 355 CK, setting his vehicle and a LASTMA officer ablaze in an attempt to evade arrest.”
He emphasised, “LASTMA reiterates its unwavering commitment to preserving order and ensuring the safety of Lagos roads, as stipulated in the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.”
He urged all drivers to comply fully with traffic rules and respect the authority of all LASTMA personnel.
