In a historic turn of events, the Faculty of Agriculture triumphed in the finals of the Vice Chancellor’s Cup, claiming the gold medal and breaking a 27-year drought. The thrilling match, held at the main bowl, Sports Complex, University of Benin, witnessed a passionate display of football skills as Agric outclassed their opponents. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Lilian Imuetinyan Salami, and the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu, graced the occasion with their presence.

From the opening whistle, the Faculty of Agric showcased their determination and expertise. Their No. 10 confidently converted an early penalty into a goal, setting the stage for an exceptional performance. Although a second goal by Agric was cancelled due to an offside call, it did not diminish their dominance. Shortly after, the relentless No. 3 of the Faculty of Agric netted 2 goals, further solidifying their lead. Throughout the match, Agric’s defense proved impenetrable, frustrating the Faculty of Education’s numerous goal attempts.

As the first half drew to a close, the Faculty of Agric held a commanding 3-0 lead, leaving their opponents with a mountain to climb in the second half. Undeterred, the Faculty of Education rallied their efforts and managed to score a goal through their determined No. 19, injecting a glimmer of hope into their pursuit.

However, amidst the gripping on-field action, the match also saw its fair share of heated moments. The referee issued three yellow cards during the game. The coach of the Faculty of Education was cautioned for expressing his discontent with a foul decision that went against his team. The Faculty of Agric received two yellow cards, one for their time-wasting goalkeeper and another for a foul committed by the player No. 11.

The intensity peaked when Agric’s No. 9 was shown a red card, reducing their squad to ten players. Despite this setback, Agric showcased their resilience and successfully defended their lead until the final whistle.

With a final scoreline of 3-1, the Faculty of Agric emerged victorious, clinching the gold medal and ending their 27-year wait for the Vice Chancellor’s Cup. The Faculty of Education settled for a respectable second-place finish, while the Faculty of Engineering secured the third position.

In the jubilant aftermath of Agric’s triumph, enthusiastic fans chanted that the faculty of agric had demonstrated that “Farmers are better than Teachers”.

This memorable football encounter will be imprinted in the Chronicles of the Vice Chancellor’s Cup, as the Faculty of Agric seized the opportunity to assert their dominance on the pitch and prove that they are a force to be reckoned with.
