The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has issued an urgent safety advisory to students regarding the ongoing conflict in the Ekọsodin community. The alert follows rising tensions between members of the Hausa community and the indigenes in the area.

In a memo signed by the SUG President, Comr. Agboola Israel Timilehin, and the Secretary-General, Comr. Lucky Michael Igbonomi, the union strongly advised students to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary movement around affected areas, and stay indoors to ensure their safety. The Students’ Union emphasized the importance of avoiding actions that could escalate the current situation.

The Students’ Union stated in the memo that they are in contact with the necessary security agencies and relevant authorities to ensure the safety of students and a swift resolution to the conflict.

Students have also been urged to remain calm and report any security concerns or emergencies promptly to the SUG or the University Security Unit.

The statement reaffirms the union’s commitment to prioritising student safety while calling for cooperation during this challenging time.
