The National Medical Laboratory Science Students’ Association, UNIBEN Chapter has brought to the notice of the university community the alleged assault of the president of the association by a lecturer.
The students’ association, in a memo released on Friday, February 7, 2025, has given details of the alleged assault of the president by a staff of the department, Dr. Owie, over the tailor recommendation for the departmental scrub on Thursday, 6th of February, 2025, at a few minutes past 11A.M.
The accused staff is alleged to have a history of verbally and physically assaulting students. It was stated that he allegedly stormed into the president’s office, descending on him with slaps, kicks, and blows for over five minutes before the intervention of another lecturer.
According to the memo, the reason for this assault was allegedly traced to the issue of the departmental students scrub. Unknown to the president, Dr Owie unlawfully instructed the class representatives to sew their scrubs from a particular tailor he recommended. Following this instruction, the students complained to the president, which resulted in his appeal for a change, disrupting the illicit process imposed by the lecturer. In a fit of rage, the accused lecturer threatened the assistant class representatives who, in turn, related this pressing issue to the president and finally to the HOD. Following the Head of Department’s intervention, no staff or student was allowed to interfere in the making of scrubs, which made the accused indignant, leading to the subsequent assault.
The students’ association has called on the Vice Chancellor to discipline the accused lecturer to put an end to assaults in the department.
“On no account should a staff be seen consistently beat students up, and this will continue in the department of Medical Laboratory Science if nothing is done. We hereby appeal to our Vice Chancellor, who is a senior advocate of Nigeria and a custodian of justice by discipline to ensure that this continuous assault comes to an end.”, the memo reads.
