The Department of Surveying and Geo-infomatics at the University of Benin has taken an important step toward supporting its students by launching a new bursary scheme under the banner of the Plant a Seed Initiative.
The initiative was officially introduced during the department’s General Assembly, led by the Wake and See Executives, reflecting a strong commitment to student-centered programs.
According to the departmental president, Tunde Akinyemi, “The Plant a Seed Initiative is designed to provide financial assistance by offering bursaries that help cover smaller, yet essential, academic expenses such as course registration fees.” He added that the goal is to ease the financial burden on students, especially those struggling to meet daily academic costs.
The launch event, held on April 14th, was met with enthusiasm, with notable stakeholders in the department making generous contributions. The Wake and See Executives led the way by making the first donation—symbolically planting the first “seed” in the initiative’s fund.
The program has since received widespread praise as a timely and impactful approach to promoting student welfare and fostering a sense of community-driven support.
