The Executive Council of the Students’ Union Government, University of Benin, has rejected the school fee hike for students admitted before the 2022/2023 academic session.
In a memo released on Wednesday, 12 February 2025, the council condemned the sudden increments, stating that they were not consulted and would not tolerate any form of increase.
“It has come to our notice that there has been a sudden and unjustified increment in school fees on the KOFA Portal without prior consultation. This arbitrary action is unacceptable, and as your elected representatives, we categorically reject any form of school fee increment.
The school fee must be reversed. This is non-negotiable.”
The news of the increment came as a surprise to students and the university community. This increase occurred less than two weeks after the management raised the hostel fees. Students admitted before the 2022/2023 academic session are now required to pay ₦63,250 (sciences), as opposed to the former ₦60,500.
The Executive Council has ordered all students to boycott the payments until further notice.
They have also demanded that the university lock the payment portal until the issue is resolved. Additionally, they stated that failure by the management to reverse the hike would be met with “derisive action from the students’ body.”
The council has urged students to remain firm and resolute as they stand together in rejecting the unfair policy.
