Senegal emerged champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after defeating host nation Morocco 1–0 after extra time in a dramatic final played in Rabat on Sunday, 18 January 2026.

Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal in the first half of extra time as the Teranga Lions secured their second AFCON title, following their first triumph in 2021.

The final was marked by controversy and disruption. Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch after Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty, shortly after a Senegal goal had been ruled out. The decision led to clashes involving players, substitutes, and fans, forcing a delay of about 14 minutes.

After play resumed, Moroccan forward Brahim Díaz missed a Panenka-style penalty in the closing moments of normal time, with Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy making the save. Extra time followed, during which Gueye’s strike proved decisive.

Morocco, who hosted the tournament, finished as runners-up after failing to convert their late opportunity to force the match into a penalty shoot-out.

Meanwhile, Nigeria ended the tournament in third place. The Super Eagles defeated Egypt 4–2 on penalties after a goalless draw in the third-place play-off, securing the bronze medal.
