The National Association of University Students (NAUS), Edo State Campus Monitoring Committee, along with student leaders from various universities in the state, visited Senator Neda Bernards Imasuen on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. The senator, representing Edo South Senatorial District and serving as the Chairman of Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petition in the Senate, hosted the delegation.

The event, anchored by Winifred Iyenoma Alebu, Senator of the 36th Assembly in the UNIBEN Students’ Union Government Parliament, commenced with the introduction of dignitaries, followed by spirited renditions of Aluta songs by the student representatives in attendance, setting the tone for the engagement.

Hon. Christopher Godstime; Kessington-Osifo Jnr Osasere, Director of Logistics and Mobilisation, NAUS Edo CMC; Abadoni Chukwuwenke (Chukwushakers); Hon. Samuella Emesone, President, UNIBEN DEBATE SOCIETY; Adara Oluwafunmilayo Elizabeth, Director of Finance, UNIBEN Debate Society; Ternenge Toba ACHI, Director of Special Duties, UNIBEN Debate Society; Lasisi Yisa Gbolahan, Director of Information, Innovation and Technology, NAUS Edo CMC; Taiye Peace Abiodun, Media Aide, NAUS Edo CMC; Isibor Blessing, NUNSA UNIBEN PRO; Bazuaye Aisosa Osawese, Director of Welfare, Social Sciences Student Association, University of Benin; Odabi Collins Victory, ACJ UNIBEN PRESIDENT; Obende Deborah Ofuje, ACJ UNIBEN Secretary General; amongst many other distinguished leaders.

UNIBEN SUG Executives present at the ceremony include, Comr. Alpha-Lemuel Osahon, President, UNIBEN SUG; Comr. Allison Nafisat, Vice President, UNIBEN SUG; Comr. Albright Chisom Ehimze, Attorney-General, UNIBEN SUG; Bienose Eghose Godstime, Director of Finance, UNIBEN SUG; Osadolor Divine Osarumen, Director of Information, UNIBEN SUG, amongst others union leaders.

The visit showcased a collaborative effort between students and the senator to address challenges and promote development in Edo State’s Universities.

NAUS EDO CMC Chairman, Comr. Osahon Destiny Eseosa, in an opening remark, provided insights into the association’s role as the highest decision-making body for all universities in Edo State. He highlighted challenges, including mobility and funding, and presented grievances from universities, such as infrastructural development, outdated academic curriculum, electricity shortages, and insecurity. Additionally, he urged Senator Imasuen to facilitate the installation of CCTV for enhanced security at university gates and advocated for palliatives in the form of transportation, grants, loans, and scholarships.

After the Chairman’s speech, which was met with resounding applause, Senator Imasuen was then bestowed with a remarkable recognition for his unwavering support towards the Edo student body. With the concurrence of Student Leaders Present, he was honoured with the distinguished title of Patron, which stands as a testament to his significant contributions towards students and youth in Edo state.

The President of the UNIBEN Debate Society, Samuella Emesone, then proceeded to announce some of NAUS’ projects, including the Edo Campus Tour. This initiative encompasses physical activities on every campus, health awareness days, recognition of extraordinary students, a university hub for skills learning, and social events/competitions across various Edo universities.

During the visit, Edo State University SUG President, Comr. Ali Adbulbasit, appealed for benevolence towards the Edo State University, emphasizing its status as a state-owned institution and not a private one. AAU Vice President, Comr. Victoria, echoed a similar plea for assistance to AAU students, irrespective of the senatorial district. UNIBEN SUG President, Comr. Alpha King-Lemuel Osahon, expressed gratitude and pledged the commitment of University of Benin students to work with Senator Imasuen as a child would support his father.

The visit concluded with closing remarks from Rt. Hon. Odabi Collins Victory, the President of the Association of Campus Journalists, University of Benin.
