The Nigeria Labour Congress has assured Nigerians that they won’t embark on any strike action on Tuesday, 11 June 2024, as they wait for the President’s decision on the minimum wage.

NLC President Joe Ajaero cleared the air on Monday, 10 June 2024, during a press conference. He said the rumours and speculations of labour embarking on a strike action on Tuesday were unfounded.

“We cannot declare a strike now because the figures are with the President. We will wait for the President’s decision,” he said.

Last Tuesday, organised labour suspended their indefinite strike for a week to allow the Federal Government to review its demands for minimum wage.

After a comprehensive review of labour demands, the Tripartite Committee proposed a ₦62,000 minimum wage as opposed to the ₦250,000 currently demanded by labour.

According to Ajaero, the figures the Tripartite Committee proposed are currently with President Bola Tinubu and do not translate to labour accepting them as the new minimum wage.

He also emphasised that labour and Nigerians are hoping that President Bola Tinubu, in his magnanimity, will increase the proposed figures better than what his predecessor did in 2015.

“During the tenure of the immediate past president, the figure that was proposed to him was ₦27,000 by the tripartite committee, but he increased it to ₦30,000. We are hopeful that this president will do the right thing,” Ajaero said.
