On 10th October, the world observes and celebrates World Mental Health Day, a global programme dedicated to raising awareness and promoting mental health education. The 2024 commemoration saw the Vice President of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), South South Zone, Comrade Michael Imoloame, addressing the mental health challenges faced by Nigerian university students.
In a press statement released today, Comrade Imoloame highlighted the critical role mental health plays in students’ academic performance. He stressed the need for universities to create environments that actively support students’ mental health.
“As part of the New Dawn Agenda, we are committed to advocating for mental health support in our universities by collaborating with institutions to provide counselling services, mental health seminars, and safe spaces where students can seek assistance.”
Comrade Imoloame reiterated the association’s dedication to advancing mental health initiatives, emphasising their continued advocacy for universities to adopt a more supportive approach towards student well-being.
In his closing remarks, Comrade Imoloame urged students to prioritise self-care and well-being, encouraging them to engage in activities that promote positive mental health. He also advised them to seek help when needed.
