The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed strong disapproval of the recent memo released by the Student Union Government (SUG) on 5 February 2024. The SUG’s memo was issued in response to NANS’ earlier statement opposing the increase in hostel fees at the University of Benin.
In a recent statement, NANS described the SUG’s stance as ironic, noting that the current SUG president, who also serves as a senator within NANS, is expected to stand with the association in opposing the fee hike. Instead, NANS alleged that the president appears to be justifying what it described as an “unprecedented increment.”
The association further criticised the SUG president’s position, arguing that rather than advocating for students’ interests, he seems to be acting as a spokesperson for the university administration. NANS emphasised that the SUG’s primary duty should be ensuring students’ welfare rather than endorsing policies that are detrimental to them or attempting to silence NANS’ genuine concerns.
NANS also expressed disappointment over the SUG’s support for yet another increase in hostel fees. It recalled that when the administration of Professor Lilian Salami previously raised fees, it justified the decision by claiming the funds would be used for hostel renovations—renovations that, according to NANS, never took place.
The association concluded its statement by reaffirming its unwavering commitment to serving Nigerian students. It demanded that the SUG provide a detailed explanation of the purpose of the hostel fee increment and insisted that substantial renovations be carried out before any fee hike could be considered justifiable.
Additionally, NANS urged the SUG to reaffirm its commitment to representing students rather than aligning with university management. It also called on the University of Benin’s administration to engage relevant stakeholders before making any policy decisions that directly impact students.
NANS ended its statement by reiterating its dedication to serving all Nigerian students without compromise, ensuring that no political pressure hinders it from fulfilling its responsibilities.
The memo was signed by Comrade Daniel O. Temple, the Director of Action and Mobilisation, NANS Edi-JCC, and addressed to UNIBEN Vice-Chancellor, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, UNIBEN SUG,NANS National,NANS Zone B and CSO UNIBEN
