On May 6, 2025, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) issued an official press statement via its verified X (formerly Twitter) account regarding the arrest of Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
According to the EFCC, Otse was apprehended on Friday, May 2, 2025, shortly after visiting a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) branch in the Area 3 district of Garki I, Abuja. He had reportedly gone to the bank with his mother and an associate to address concerns over unauthorised deductions from his mother’s account.
The EFCC stated that Otse was invited following multiple petitions filed against him, alleging various financial offences. Despite repeated summons sent to his verified address and through other known channels of communication, Otse allegedly failed to respond.
In the commission’s words, the petitions involved “grievous allegations of financial malfeasance” which could not be overlooked. The EFCC also acknowledged Otse’s previous public criticisms of the agency, describing them as “unguarded attacks”, but clarified that no such incidents occurred during his arrest. It noted that any related matters would be referred to the appropriate law enforcement bodies for further review.
Reaffirming its constitutional mandate, the EFCC maintained that Otse’s arrest was lawful and by due process. He has since been granted administrative bail and will be released upon meeting the stipulated conditions.
The commission concluded by thanking Nigerians who expressed concern over the matter, assuring the public that its actions were in line with its constitutional duties. It also warned against the spread of misinformation and urged citizens to allow the commission to carry out its responsibilities without fear or favour. Upon the conclusion of investigations, appropriate charges will be filed as necessary.
