The National Association of the Nigerian Students(NANS), Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Edo State Axis, in a conclusive move to fight against the increasing threat of cultism in higher institutions, and communities, specifically Edo state at large, has initiated a 14- day Anti-Cultism Campaign which will come up on the 30th of May, 2025, and end on the 15th of June, 2025. This is an informative campaign aimed at educating the public, particularly students on the Edo State Cultism Prohibition Acts(2025).
The Act is a secret cult prohibition signed by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, into law. In a news report published by THE NATION on the 30th of January, 2025, the Secretary to the Edo State Government (SSG), Ulmar, mentioned that the initial law on cultism has been revoked to instil tougher punishments on cultist and their sponsors. This upcoming campaign will enlighten participants more on the Act and its impact.
This campaign which has been signed by Comrade Daniel O Temple, the Director of Action and Mobilization, NANS, Edo State JCC, is targeted at educating students and the general public on the provisions of the Edo State Cultism Prohibition Act. It also aims to create awareness of the dangers, legal consequences, and societal impact of cult-related activities and promote peace and security. In an interview with Comrade Daniel Temple, he established that in a bid to enhance sustainable development in conformity with SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, billboards will be erected across various campuses in Edo state during this campaign.
This 14-day Anti cultism campaign promises to be an interesting and productive one, as it contains various consistent activities. It is also an anticipatory step towards a cultism-free Edo state. NANS JCC, Edo Axis, therefore calls on all students, educational institutions, community leaders, civil society groups, and the media to join hands in this bold movement against cultism.
