A total of 2,300 ghost names have been identified in their payroll by the Abia State Government using the unified payment system. They have been able to save 220 million naira on monthly wage bills in the state.

After a meeting with Governor Alex Otti on Monday in Umuahia, the Accountant General of the state, Deaconess Njum Onyemenam, said, ‘So far, we have been able to save 220 million naira from the ongoing verification of workers in the state, local government, and pensioners. Not less than 2,300 ghost names have been removed from the payrolls using the unified payment system, and we hope to still identify more as we continue with the exercise.’

Onyemenam also disclosed that, using the unified payment system, the state government paid the arrears of April salaries and also June pensions to retirees last week. She also added that the state hoped to make more savings from the ongoing verification
