YouTube Shifts Policy to Prioritize Original Reporting Over Automated Content

By David Simeon

YouTube has taken massive action to halt the spread of mass-produced, unoriginal, and repetitive content, the platform’s updated monetization policy is here. The new policy, which comes into force on July 15, has been implemented to ensure that it is the creators behind meaningful and original videos that benefit financially.

Channels dominated by such content might not be eligible for Youtube monetization under the new policy, which also makes no exception for AI-narrated slideshows, unedited compilations, or generic “stock” footage that isn’t sufficiently commented on or directed. The shift will affect what YouTube calls “borderline” videos that don’t quite violate its policies because they are part of a new trend of “low-effort” content that also isn’t valuable to viewers.

YouTube said, crucially, that AI tools are not prohibited, but creators should use them responsibly.
