World Water Day, having its motto to be “By means of water, we give life to everything”, is celebrated every 22nd of March, every year. This according to the UN is done to spread awareness about the water crisis all over the world.
WWD 2023 celebration theme is “Accelerating the change to solve the water and sanitation crisis”. It aims at achieving the vision of sustainable water and sanitation for all by 2023.
According to the UN, “Billions of people and countless schools, businesses, healthcare centres, farms, and factories lack the safe water that is needed for human survival. We need to accelerate change – to go beyond business as usual.”
The idea of WWD was adopted by the UN’s General Assembly on December 22, 1992. March 22 was then declared as its fixed annual celebration date. As a result, the first celebration was on March 2, 1993. The first theme for WWD in 1993 was “Water for life”. The first celebration had its focus on the important and delicate role that freshwater resources play in supporting human life and advancement.
The popular saying “water, e no get enemy” shows the importance of water to life. By statistics, China and the United States of America consume the biggest amount of water per day, due to their population. With the UN report, one in four people does not have clean drinking water. Ethiopia has the least amount of drinking water. Applause to Israel, as she has been the greatest leader in water conservation. Almost 2 million death of Children due to lack of clean water is recorded based on statistics. 1.1 billion people lack safe water and 2.6 billion suffer from inadequate sewerage. Thus, this day is celebrated to create awareness of the essence of water purification and conservation.
“You and your family, school, and community can make a difference by changing the way you use, consume, and manage water in your lives”. To this statement, the UN will hold the UN 2023 Water Conference, the first of its kind, on March 22nd – 24th, in New York. At this conference, the Water Action Agenda will be launched – the promise that everyone would have safely managed water and sanitation by 2030. The achievement of this agenda lies not in the agenda but in the people worldwide. Care must be given to water carriers, tanks, tunnels, canals, gutters, etc to ensure the circulation of clean water.
Stop water pollution today and save a soul.
