UNIBEN Royals have had a rough start in the Varsity Cup as they are currently in the bottom of Group A, comprising OAU Men’s team, UNN Men’s team, AAUA Men’s team, and UNILAG Men’s team. UNIBEN Royals’ current form in Group A of this competition sees them having won only 1 of their matches and lost 2, leaving them in 4th place in the group stage.
UNIBEN Royals have performed poorly in the competition, managing to score five goals while conceding 8. The head coach of the UNIBEN Royals revealed that his players were not adequately prepared for the matches due to the school break, having only two weeks to prepare. Many of the players are new to the team, as most of the previous players had graduated, leaving some parts of the squad void, necessitating key replacements. Unfortunately, there was not enough time to make these adjustments due to the break.
He also commented on the officiating of the game, stating that it was good and fair:
“Because of the break and all that in UNIBEN, before that I knew that we would not go far in this competition—that’s the truth—because it’s an opportunity for us to pick the kind of players that will fill in the vacuum left by most of our players that graduated,”head coach Omorogbe Idahosa said after he and his team failed to qualify for the next round.
UNILAG’s spell in the competition has also been controversial and shocking, as they have been forfeiting all their matches for unknown reasons, leaving them at the bottom of the table, having lost all 4 matches. OAU Men’s team are the stars of the group, asserting their dominance against their rivals as they won all 4 matches, scoring 10 goals and conceding only 1. They move forward with their heads held high into the next round, topping Group A.
UNN Men’s team were also impressive as they progressed to the next round after winning 3 of their matches and losing only 1, while scoring 8 goals and conceding 3.
