Unveiling the Struggles: Navigating Nigeria’s Crippling Economy Impact on Students’ Academic Pursuits and Well-being

By Akinnusimi Omosewa

It is no news that academic activities for the second semester of the 2022/2023 session are already in progress, but most students are still held back by the shackles of a crippling economy in their various homes.

The hike in the price of fuel has made it rather difficult for students to resume school, especially those who reside in other states. It is one thing to transport yourself back to school, and another to survive in school.

The state of our economy has become a burden for us all, as the struggle for survival intensifies with each passing day. This has particularly affected the academic sector, as not only students feel the brunt, but also academic and non-academic staff of the various tertiary institutions in the country.

How then is the average Nigerian student expected to thrive academically when he can barely feed? The increase in the price of school fees and reading materials has become discouraging to students who came into the system with lofty dreams and hope for a brighter future. This, in turn, has led to an increment in cybercrimes and other societal vices. The rate of depression among students has also skyrocketed.

The sorry state of our crumbling economy has not only made many students drop out of school; it equally has devastating effects on those who are still struggling to remain in school, taking a toll on their mental and physical health.
