The University of Benin has rectified an error in determining the best graduating student for the 2020/2021 academic session.

At the 48th convocation ceremony on November 24, 2023, Mr. Eghosa Michael Osayande, initially announced as the overall best graduating student from the Faculty of Engineering with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.9123, faced contestation from Mr. Basil Enebeli. Despite obtaining a higher CGPA of 4.9142, Enebeli was mistakenly awarded the second position, resulting in a discrepancy in the announcement of the best graduating student.

In response, the Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, Professor Joseph E. Osemwenkhae, and the Head of the Department of Physics, Professor O.D Osahon, formally requested a review and rectification from the university management. They advocated placing all awards related to the best graduating student on hold pending resolution. If confirmed as the best, Mr. Enebeli was to receive rightful recognition and entitlements as the valedictorian.

Upon thorough investigation, it was discovered that Mr. Enebeli’s CGPA of 4.9142, calculated to four decimal places, displaced Mr. Osayande’s 4.9123 when considered on the same scale. Consequently, Mr. Enebeli rightfully emerges as the overall best graduating student for the 2020/2021 academic session (2021 graduating set).

Recent reports confirm that Mr. Basil Enebeli, a native of Ndokwa, Delta State, Nigeria, now holds the distinction as the top graduate of the University of Benin’s 2021 graduating set, representing the Physics Department within the Faculty of Physical Sciences.
