The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Lilian Salami, announced on Monday, 18 November 2024, at the Senate Building during a media briefing ahead of the convocation ceremony, that 385 outstanding undergraduates will receive first-class honours during the university’s 49th/50th convocation ceremony, scheduled to take place from 20 to 23 November 2024.

Professor Salami stated that the award of first-class degrees will take place on 22 November, while the award of higher degrees is slated for 23 November 2024. A total of 10,109 students will graduate for the 2021/2022 academic session, and 10,024 for the 2022/2023 session.

During the convocation, she revealed that seven distinguished academics will be conferred with the title of Professor Emeritus. Among the recipients are Professor Friday Okonofua, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences; Professor Nosakhare Odeh Eghafona; Professor Felix Okeimen; and Professor Ikponmwosa Owie. Additionally, three prominent Nigerian personalities will be awarded honorary degrees.

Speaking on her achievements over the past five years, Professor Salami highlighted the establishment of the Information Communication Technology/Central Research Processing Unit (ICT/CRPU) and the Centre for Educational Technology (CET). She also noted that various infrastructure projects were completed under her administration, including ultra-modern office buildings, lecture theatres, multimedia gadgets, and faculty buildings, which have significantly improved access to quality education for students.

Professor Salami added that this convocation ceremony would be her last as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, marking the conclusion of a tenure characterised by transformative developments in the institution.
