The students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) are threatening to protest over the alleged removal of the name of a student of the institution from the graduation/NYSC list by the management.
The said student’s name is Obinna Ezechukwu, a student from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Political Science, UNIBEN, and was among the graduating set of the 2020/2021 academic session. According to the news going around, Obinna’s name was allegedly omitted or removed by the management of the institution.
Some students have alleged that his name may have been removed from the graduation/NYSC list because of a publication made by the said student, Obinna, regarding the recent school fee increment by the university management for the admitted students into the 2022/2023 academic session. The fee increment was earlier pegged at N190,000 for sciences and N170,000 for non-sciences students. According to the statement released by the Students Union Government (SUG) heads, after deliberation with the management, the school fees were reduced to N105,000 for non-sciences and N115,000 for sciences.
The students are currently trending the hashtags “#FreeObinna” and “#NaThisOneGoCauseProtestNow” in solidarity with the said student on Students community WhatsApp group chats within the institution.
As of the time of filing this report, it is yet to be ascertained the authenticity of these allegations being rumored by students. More updates will be released later.
