By Favour Chiemerie Ezeh

The University of Benin community is in deep sorrow as they mourn the loss of one of their own. The departed student is identified as Obehi Alibe, a 400-level Law student, who tragically couldn’t return for the 2022/2023 academic session.

The heart-wrenching news was revealed on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, that Obehi passed away in Abuja, Nigeria, the night before after a brief illness that was a result of accumulated stress, typhoid, and malaria. It has been disclosed that she had been showing symptoms of this illness during the University’s scheduled second-semester examinations for the 2021/2022 academic year.

On Friday, October 13, 2023, friends, loved ones, and fellow students gathered en masse to bid their final farewell to Obehi. She had been laid to rest on September 26th at an Abuja cemetery, with her parents and loved ones in attendance.

Her faculty marked Friday, October 13, 2023, as a special day to honor their departed student. The procession began around 9 a.m. at the Faculty of Law, where her coursemates gathered dressed in all-black attire. They carried her photos and banners, showing their deep respect for their fellow student. The procession covered various significant places within the University community, including the Law Faculty, Halls of Residence, physical sciences, Twin Lt, and Faculty of Arts. Throughout, they chanted words of solace and expressed their profound emotions for their departed coursemate.

Rest in peace, Obehi Alibe,
Rest in peace, fallen comrade,
Forever in our hearts.
