The Management of the University of Benin has reportedly arrested some individuals allegedly involved in admission racketeering.
This was announced in a circular received from the institution’s PRO, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire on Sunday, 1st October, 2023. The ACJ UNIBEN reports that the University had earlier issued an open warning to individuals parading themselves illegally as admission officers. These arrests follow investigations and intelligence reports received by the university management on the fraudulent activity.
“Members of the syndicates parade themselves as admission officers of the University and engage in admission racketeering and falsification of admission documents,” the circular read in part.
There are also reports of victims who have been deceived into paying tuition fee to the said agents who pretends to be intermediaries between the students and the university. Law enforcement has taken action, leading to several arrests.
The University Management further clarifies that there are no fees attached with the University of Benin’s admissions procedure and warns the general public to beware of these fraudulent schemes.
