In a memo recently released by the Students’ Union Government of the University of Benin, signed by President Comr. Alpha Lemuel King and Secretary General Comr. Eriamiatoe Miracle, dated January 4, 2024, the school community has been informed about the procurement of a new 7.5MVA transformer.

This crucial development follows a period of frustrating power disruptions and prolonged outages. The school faced severe electricity supply issues, with power outages persisting well into the first semester examinations and extending through the holidays. Even the hostels were not spared, relying on backup generators during this challenging period.

Medical student Wisdom shared his experience, stating, “The university was in total darkness for over two weeks, impacting holiday study plans significantly. Not much could be accomplished.” When questioned about coping strategies, he added, “It wasn’t easy. I had to shuttle between the hostel and the teaching hospital, spending some nights in the call room at UBTH to charge my gadgets.”

The news of the transformer purchase has brought considerable relief to the school community, signaling potential respite as the new semester is set to commence on January 7, 2024. The acquisition raises hopes for a smoother and more stable power supply, alleviating the challenges faced during the previous semester.
