University of Benin Announces Postgraduate Programmes Admission: Applications Now Open

The University of Benin has announced that applications are now being accepted from qualified candidates for admission into its Postgraduate programs. This was announced in a communique, signed by Ademola A. Bobola, mnim, fcipm, Registrar, University of Benin.

The programmes include the Postgraduate Diploma, Masters degree, Master of Philosophy, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, offered across various faculties, colleges, schools, institutes, and centers of the university.

To be eligible for postgraduate studies at the University of Benin, candidates must have obtained a minimum of five (5) credits in WASC, NECO, GCE (ordinary level or their equivalents), with at least four credits at the Ordinary level, along with additional qualifications such as OND (not pass), NCE, IJMB, or Advance level passes. Holders of a Pass Degree/Diploma are not eligible for admission into the university’s postgraduate programmes. Furthermore, candidates with a 3rd class degree must possess a PGD to be considered for admission into the Masters Programmes.

Candidates who have obtained a Masters Degree with a Weighted Average Score (WAS) between 55-59% may be considered for admission into the M.Phil. Programme in the first instance. For those applying for a PhD programme, a minimum weighted average score of 60% in the Masters Degree Programme is required. Candidates holding a Masters Degree from another university who have not previously taken equivalent compulsory courses as those offered by the University of Benin must, upon admission, complete and pass such courses with a minimum score of 60%.

It is important to note that only applicants with an NYSC discharge, exemption, or exclusion certificate will be cleared for admission into the postgraduate programme of the University.

Referee reports are an essential part of the application process. Candidates are required to print out the referee forms provided on the application page, fill them out, and return them directly to the Secretary of the School of Postgraduate Studies. Applications will not be processed without the availability of referee reports.

Interested candidates can choose from a variety of courses offered by the various faculties, colleges, institutes, and centers of the University of Benin, including Agriculture, Arts, Education, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Law, Life Sciences, Management Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Pharmacy, College of Medical Sciences, School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Dentistry, School of Medicine, Institute of Education, Institute of Public Administration and Extension Services, Institute of Child Health, and several centers such as the Center for Gender Studies, Center of Excellence in Geosciences (CoE), Center of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation (CERHI), and Center of Excellence in Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement (SPESSE).

The communique, made available by the Public Relations Unit of the University, noted that the Department of Quantity Surveying in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, recently received approval for several new postgraduate programmes, including PGD Quantity Surveying, PGD Construction Management, M.Sc Quantity Surveying, and M.Sc Construction Management.

To apply for admission, candidates are required to purchase application forms online using a valid VERVE or MASTER ATM BANK CARD. The application fee is Twenty-Two Thousand Naira (N22,000.00). The form must be filled out accurately with all the necessary information before submitting it online. The completed form should be printed from the UNIBEN website, along with the application and referee forms. Incomplete forms will not be considered. The application deadline is set at July 31st, 2023.

Once candidates have been granted admission into the various postgraduate programs, they must proceed to pay the total amount of Non-Refundable Acceptance fees, which is set at Sixty Thousand Naira (N60,000.00). It is important to note that acceptance fees must be paid before candidates can be cleared and fully admitted.
