The environment is a big contributor to Man’s living. As such, great care should be given to it to ensure the proper living of man. The state of the environment also shows the standard of living of Man and, in another way, shows the level of Man’s knowledge. Many centuries back, Africa was called different names: the barbaric, primitive, dark continent, continent of apes, etc. All these were due to their perception of African knowledge. In essence, man is judged by the level of his knowledge, and there are many ways to do that, of which the Environment is a great example. The state of man’s environment is one of the quantifiers of man’s knowledge.

Keeping the Environment clean is a major task of man to his environment. Benin city, Edo state has always been up and doing with this. However, disposing of waste and baggage has continued to be a challenging factor in her environment as about a large percentage of her citizens put their waste to flames as a method of disposal, and the harmful effect of this is “Air Pollution.”

More so, waste management is a great issue in the environment. It is known that in Benin city, quite a large number set waste on fire to dispose of them. Now, improper management of waste before it goes to flames is another issue. This leaves the environment dirty and the air unbreathable, causing harm to Man’s health.

There is a path along the Faculty of Arts in UNIBEN that leads to the LTs (Lecture Theatres) area. Refuse on that path has made it a disgusting site.

If it is a site for refuse dumping, there are ways to manage refuse to look neat. A brick extension can be made to house the waste until it’s disposed properly at a preferable time.

The school is the epitome of knowledge, which is supposed to propagate proper ways of living. In maintaining a great environment, proper drainage systems should be employed. Gutters around the school should be properly cleaned so as not to become a home for Malaria carriers. The gutter behind the Faculty of Arts leading to the road between the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Agric was captured to be blocked with waste products. The gutter in front of the Faculty of Law sometimes gives an awful odor when it’s stagnant.

The path that leads to June 12 from CED (Centre for Entrepreneurship Development) area has always been a sight detestable to the eyes and unpleasant to the nose due to the mismanagement of waste.

One of the blessings of God to man is great health, which requires great care from man. Students and Vendors should cultivate the habit of proper waste disposal. The gutters are not meant for waste particles but to channel liquid substances. The School management should make erected areas for waste disposal, and laws should be made regarding the mismanagement of waste.
