According to history, the great trek happened between 1835 and early 1840s. The boers were on a long trek from the cape colony of South Africa to the inner region of South Africa for greener pastures and in rebellion against the policies of the British government.
Now history has repeated itself in UNIBEN in another clothing. Due to an upheaval which happened on the 5th of Sept, 2021, between some tricycle drivers and some native inhabitants who were perceived to be cultist; UNIBEN back gate, linking the school and the village of Ekosodin, was locked for the safety of the School and Students.
However, early morning of, Sept. 6, 2021, the Vigilantes were on the look out and tricycles were restricted on the Ekosodin road.
This left the Uniben Ekosodite no other option than to trek to the school main gate. As a result, there was a hot chase for bus at the gate, as there were a lot of people on the wait. This also led to over crowding of buses and cars along UNIBEN bank road. The School back gate is surely controlling a lot regarding the school.
By the end of 6th of Sept., 2021, joyful noise was heard in Ekosodin as the school back gate was reopened.
A history student said “the journey was too far from easy. I am very sure that if the gate was not opened, students will gracefully miss lectures.”
Another lamented, that she couldn’t make it to class on Monday because the gate was locked and she couldn’t join the great trek.
Fortunately, history smiled on us, as the trek lasted just a day. What an unforgettable day for UNIBEN Students!.
