The Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Edoba Omoregie, SAN, has been appointed to a high-powered Ministerial Committee tasked with reviewing sports courses and curricula in Nigerian tertiary institutions, following the university’s selection as the Sports Centre of Excellence for the South-South geo-political zone under a presidential directive on sports development.

The initiative is part of the Federal Government’s wider efforts to reposition sports within the academic space and revitalise infrastructure to promote physical fitness and sporting culture across higher institutions.

According to a statement issued by the Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs R.G. Ilyasu, on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, CON, the committee is mandated to review and revise sports-related academic programmes, improve sports infrastructure, and support the integration of sports into institutional development frameworks.

This was stated in a communique released by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Benedicta Ehanire, on Saturday. Dr. Benedicta also confirmed that the Federal Ministry of Education is working in collaboration with the National Sports Commission to execute the presidential directive and ensure the successful implementation of the committee’s objectives.
