UNIBEN UNVEILS UPDATED STUDENT RULES – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

By Obende Deborah

The University of Benin’s Students Affairs Division has recently released a set of rules and regulations that all students, particularly those residing on campus, are required to follow. These guidelines have been established to prioritize the safety, security, and well-being of all members within the university community, as well as to uphold an environment conducive to academic pursuits.

2. Students must occupy the rooms assigned to them without engaging in room swapping or substitutions.

3. Students are strictly prohibited from selling or transferring their bed spaces, and squatting in any form is not allowed.

4. All residents are required to produce their identity cards upon request by hostel staff.

5. Residents must maintain a high standard of decorum and behavior. Any acts of threats, violence, deliberate property damage, or disruptive behavior will be met with appropriate sanctions.

6. Complaints should be directed to the Porter or any hall official.

7. Students are not allowed to bring pets or heavy electrical appliances into the halls of residence.

8. Cooking is only permitted in designated utility rooms, not in individual rooms.

9. Upon moving into the hostel, students are expected to ensure that room items are in good condition, reporting any damage to hostel staff in writing.

10. Activities such as fighting, stealing, shouting, and playing loud music that cause disturbance to others in the halls are strictly prohibited.

11. Visitors are restricted to common rooms between 4 pm and 6 pm daily; they are not permitted in students’ rooms.

12. Maintaining cleanliness in rooms is mandatory, and outdoor bathing and “short-putting” are strictly prohibited.

19. Birthday celebrations, champagne popping, and DJ setups are not allowed in hostels.

20. In case of damage to or loss of hostel property, the responsible students will be held accountable for the cost.

21. Smoking, consumption of tobacco, alcoholic drinks, or narcotics within the hostel premises is strictly prohibited.

22. Engaging in undesirable activities such as physical assault or property damage will result in expulsion from the hostel.

23. Privacy, security, and individual rights of students must be respected.

24. Students must return University properties at the end of each semester/session; any items left behind will be at the student’s own risk.

25. All students must vacate the halls of residence on the specified evacuation date determined by the University.

Violation of any of the above rules and regulations will lead to disciplinary action or eviction from the hostel, as determined by the University.

It is imperative that all UNIBEN students, particularly those living on campus, acquaint themselves with these new rules and regulations. Failure to adhere to these guidelines will result in disciplinary actions, including potential eviction from the hostel or other sanctions deemed appropriate by the University management.

Furthermore, students are encouraged to ensure that the items listed in their rooms, including standing fans, reading tables and chairs, toilet facilities, electrical switches, bulbs, sockets, wardrobes, kitchen cabinets, and window blinds, remain in good condition to avoid replacement costs at the end of the academic session.
