The University of Benin (UNIBEN) is set to take a leading role in the National Council on Climate Change’s initiative to regenerate 20 hectares of mangrove forest per state. This was disclosed by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Edoba Omoregie, SAN, during his visit to the Director General of the Council in Abuja.

Professor Omoregie highlighted UNIBEN’s ongoing efforts to address environmental sustainability, revealing plans to establish an Office on Climate Change and introduce a Climate Change Club on campus. He emphasized that these initiatives aim to underline the critical role of environmental stewardship in human activities.

Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe, the Director General of the National Council on Climate Change, commended the Vice Chancellor’s dedication to environmental causes. She noted that academia should play a central role in advancing climate literacy and expressed her willingness to collaborate with UNIBEN in its systematic regeneration goals for its campuses.

The University’s commitment to environmental ideals marks a significant step in fostering climate awareness and sustainability practices in Nigeria.
