The Halls of Residence at the University of Benin have been buzzing with outrage as cases of theft have become rampant at an alarming rate. Occupants of Hall 2 woke up this morning to the shrieks of a fellow occupant whose phone, money and laptop had been carted away, ACJ-UNIBEN reporting.
The incident took place in the early hours of today, Tuesday, February 22nd, 2022. In the heat of anger, the victim who happened to be an optometry student and an occupant of Room 202, Block F, summoned the mayoress out of her chambers.
“Mmasi where are you? What’s going on? What exactly is happening?”, she panicked.
In a reaction to the alarm raised, porters sluggishly surveyed the area of the crime scene. According to her roommate, the thief in question was tall, dark and a swift runner, talented enough to open a locked door. Clearly, there’s a height and description of the thief but no face to the build.
“What do I tell my dad? He just repaired the laptop” The victim expressed so much pain as she cried out, echoing the fears of every occupant of the hostel who questioned their safety and security.
BEGIN THE SEARCH
More drama unfolded as Hall 2 went feverish with excitement and fear. Following the theft in the early hours of the morning, security men and women stormed the block in a bid to get to the root of the issue as per who stole and why. Accompanying the security men and women was the victim, Precious and the Hall PEO, Mrs Innocenta James.
The proposed solution was to search every room in Block F just incase the culprit left imprints of her misdeeds. Occupants in each of the rooms had their bags searched by the victim and the security personnel.
Following the investigation of the rooms, one of Precious’ roommates was escorted into the security van for more questioning, reason being that she saw the culprit and raised no alarm.
The silent question filtering the air was, “Which thief in her right mind would keep waiting two hours after the incident just to get caught?”

MORE CASES OF THEFTS
ACJ-UNIBEN received more reports of another case of theft that happened today in the same Hall 2, Block B, Room 205. Witnesses identified the stolen item as a “black Infinix Phone”.
The victim, identified as Chinelo was seen moving round the blocks of residence, trying to find the phone.

It was also learnt from an anonymous source that a similar incident took place on Thursday 17th, February, 2022 in Hall 2, Block F. “Some of the roommates were out, others were sleeping. No one knows when somebody came in to steal. They spoilt the door. Some people say maybe they spray sleeping medicine for the windows. Me, I believe it’s juju”, the source said.
ACJ-UNIBEN gathered that the incident took place around 1am and the stolen items included phones, clothes and a waist trainer. “Might be a lady with a big stomach”, the source jokingly said. The Hall PEO reportedly accused the roommates of going to clubs and claimed that was why the thief had the chance to steal from them.
