UNIBEN Students’ Union Cancels Miss UNIBEN Show Amid Concerns

The University of Benin Students’ Union Government (SUG) has officially cancelled the much-anticipated Miss UNIBEN Show for this year, citing concerns over student safety, financial transparency, and past allegations of exploitation and harassment.

In a statement released today, 30 November 2024, the union explained that the decision followed careful consideration of issues that could potentially undermine the welfare and dignity of the student body. The memo, signed by the SUG President, Comrade Agboola Israel Timilehin, and Secretary-General, Comrade Lucky Michael Igbonomi, urged students to avoid any involvement in the event.

“We strongly advise that no student should purchase tickets or participate in any way,” the statement read. “We must prioritise the welfare and dignity of our student body, and this event, as it stands, fails to meet those standards.”

The union’s leadership emphasised its commitment to creating a safe and accountable environment for all students. While this decision may come as a disappointment to some, it reflects the union’s efforts to address longstanding concerns and protect the interests of the university community.
